Its easy to change the Windows Startup and Shutdown screen graphics under Windows 98 since u only have to modify the picture files logo.sys and logosw.sys in c:\windows. Unfortunately, the process is not so simple as changing a graphic file under Windows XP. In the latest version of Windows, the boot screen information is stored in a file called ntsokrnl.exe. Although it’s possible to modify this file manually, it’s a difficult process. However, there's an alternative means of changing these graphics using a program called Logon Loader.Begin by downloading Logon Loader (freeware from www.radfiles.com/logonloader/). The utility enables you to use alternative log-on executables, which include all of the information you need to replace your Welcome and Shutdown graphics. You can download free log-on executables at many Web sites including www.deskmod.com, but the quality of these free files vary and you’ll need to test them to see which ones work best. Before you download any alternative log-on executables, go to the Windows/Resources directory and create a sub-directory called logonui, then make subdirectories for each of the log-on executables you download. These files are usually distributed as Zip archives with an executable file and a JPG graphic. The JPG file isn’t essential, but it’s nice to have since it enables you to see a preview of the graphic in Logon Loader.Once you have downloaded the files and unzipped the archives, launch Logon Loader and click the Browse Logon screen button. All of the files you downloaded should appear in this list. If you don’t see them, click Close, then click the Options tab and make sure you’ve placed the files in the folder in the Logon Screen Folder box.If the downloads are listed, click each one to see a preview. Click the one you want to use, then click Set As Logon Screen.
